A washing machine rarely fails without warning. In most of the homes our technicians visit across Karachi, the machine had been making an odd noise, draining slowly, or leaving clothes wetter than usual for weeks before it finally stopped. The fault that eventually gets reported as "machine dead ho gayi" is usually the end of a chain that started small — and cheap to fix.

This guide explains what actually breaks, in plain language. Some of it you can check yourself in ten minutes without tools. The rest needs someone who knows the machine — and we have been clear about which is which, because a washing machine combines water and mains electricity, and that is not a good place to experiment.

The 7 most common washing machine faults

1. Machine will not drain — water stays in the drum

This is the single most common complaint we receive. In roughly seven out of ten cases the cause is mechanical and simple: a blocked drain filter, a coin or hair clip lodged in the pump, or an outlet hose that is kinked or pushed too far into the drain. The remaining cases are a failed drain pump, which hums or stays silent instead of producing a steady whirring sound.

The filter is a safe DIY check and we explain it below. The pump is a technician job — it sits behind a panel, holds residual water, and is wired to the mains.

2. Drum will not spin, or clothes come out soaking wet

On top-load machines this is very often the belt: it stretches, slips, and eventually snaps. You will hear the motor running while the drum stays still. On front-load machines the usual suspects are worn carbon brushes on the motor, a failed door lock (the machine refuses to spin if it cannot confirm the door is shut), or a faulty speed sensor.

One more possibility worth ruling out first: an unbalanced load. A single heavy blanket or a bunched-up bedsheet can make the machine abandon the spin cycle as a safety measure. Redistribute the load and try again before assuming anything is broken.

3. Machine shakes violently or walks across the floor

Start with the boring explanations, because they are usually right. An unlevel floor, feet that were never adjusted after delivery, or transit bolts still fitted on the back of a front-load machine will all cause severe shaking. We have attended calls where the entire fault was four shipping bolts nobody removed.

If the floor is level, the feet are adjusted, and the load is balanced but the machine still bangs loudly during spin, the drum bearings or shock absorbers are worn. Do not keep using it in this state — a failing bearing will eventually damage the drum and outer tub, turning a moderate repair into an expensive one.

4. Water leaking from underneath

Leaks are ranked by how alarming they should be. A leak from the inlet hose connection or a loose clamp is minor and quickly fixed. A leak from the door seal on a front-load machine, usually caused by a trapped coin tearing the rubber, needs the gasket replaced. A leak from the outer tub or drum seal is the serious one, and it needs proper attention because water reaching the motor or electronics turns a repair into a replacement.

Do this first with any leak: switch the machine off at the socket and close the water inlet tap before investigating. Water and a live 220V appliance together are genuinely dangerous, not just inconvenient.

5. Machine will not turn on at all

Before assuming the worst, check the obvious chain: socket, plug, and the door. Many front-load machines will not start at all if the door lock has failed, because the control board never receives confirmation that the door is closed. Beyond that, the causes are a blown fuse or thermal cut-out, a failed power supply section, or a faulty main control board — all technician territory.

6. Clothes are not being cleaned properly

If clothes come out dull, still stained, or with white powder residue, the machine is often mechanically fine. Overloading is the most frequent reason, followed by too much detergent, water that is not heating, or scale build-up from hard water. Detergent needs room and movement to work; a drum packed to the top prevents both.

7. Error code on the display

Modern Dawlance, Haier, LG and Samsung automatic machines show a code rather than just failing silently. The code narrows the fault down considerably — it typically points to water inlet, drainage, door lock, motor, or heating. Note the exact code before you call anyone. It saves diagnostic time and gives you a check on whether the person diagnosing the machine actually knows the model.

Safe checks you can do yourself first

These four checks are safe, require no tools beyond a bucket and a cloth, and resolve a meaningful share of the calls we receive. Do them with the machine unplugged and the water tap closed.

  1. Clean the drain filter. On front-load machines there is a small hatch at the bottom front. Place a shallow tray and a towel underneath, open it slowly, let the water drain out, then remove and rinse the filter. Coins, buttons, hair clips and lint collect here. On many top-load machines there is a lint filter inside the drum instead.
  2. Check the outlet hose. Pull the machine forward and look for kinks, crushing against the wall, or a hose pushed too deep into the drain pipe, which creates a siphon. Straighten it and make sure the end sits at the height the manual specifies.
  3. Clean the inlet filter. Close the tap, unscrew the inlet hose at the machine end, and check the small mesh screen inside the connection. In Karachi this clogs with sediment far faster than manufacturers assume, and a clogged screen causes slow filling and "not enough water" errors.
  4. Level the machine and check the load. Rock it gently at each corner. If it moves, adjust the feet until it sits firm. Then run a spin cycle with a balanced medium load rather than one heavy item.

What not to attempt: opening the rear or side panels, testing components with the machine plugged in, replacing the pump, motor, belt, heating element or control board, or dismantling the drum. These involve mains voltage, water, and calibration steps. This is where a technician earns their fee, and where a mistake can cost you the machine or a shock.

Signs you should stop and call a technician

Switch the machine off at the socket and arrange a technician if you notice any of the following:

  • A burning smell, scorch marks around the plug, or visible smoke
  • Any tingle or shock when touching the machine body — this indicates an earthing fault and is a safety emergency
  • Loud grinding or metallic knocking during spin, which usually means bearings
  • Water pooling under the machine after the basic hose and clamp checks are done
  • The machine trips your breaker or RCD every time it runs
  • An error code that persists after unplugging the machine for ten minutes and restarting
  • The drum has visible play — you can move it up and down by hand

The earthing point deserves emphasis. Many older buildings in Karachi have inadequate or absent earthing, and a washing machine is one of the appliances where that becomes dangerous rather than merely non-compliant. If you feel any current from the body, stop using it and have the circuit checked — our electricians handle exactly this.

Washing machine repair cost in Karachi

Prices vary by brand, model and part availability, but the ranges below reflect what we typically see in Karachi as of 2026. Treat them as a sanity check rather than a quotation — they exist so you can tell a fair price from an inflated one.

RepairTypical range (PKR)Notes
Inspection / diagnosis500 – 1,500Often waived or adjusted if you proceed with the repair
Drain filter cleaning / blockage removal1,000 – 2,000Frequently avoidable with the DIY check above
Belt replacement (top-load)1,500 – 3,000Common on machines over 4 years old
Drain pump replacement2,500 – 6,000Original parts cost more but last longer
Door seal / gasket (front-load)3,500 – 8,000Brand-dependent; original seals are worth it
Inlet valve replacement2,000 – 4,500Fixes slow-filling and no-fill faults
Heating element3,000 – 7,000Hard-water scale is the usual cause of failure
Motor carbon brushes2,000 – 4,000Much cheaper than a full motor replacement
Motor replacement7,000 – 15,000Worth weighing against machine age
Main PCB / control board6,000 – 18,000The most variable item; get the price confirmed first
Drum bearing replacement8,000 – 18,000Labour-heavy; sometimes needs workshop time

Two things protect you regardless of who does the work. First, ask for the diagnosis and the price before work begins, not after the machine is open. Second, ask whether the part is original or aftermarket, and what warranty comes with it. A cheaper aftermarket pump that fails in five months is not a saving.

A note on how we price: Kaamzen technicians diagnose the fault, tell you the cost upfront, and only proceed once you agree. Parts and workmanship are covered by a warranty. You will not get a bill that grew halfway through the job.

Why Karachi is hard on washing machines

Machines here fail earlier than their design life suggests, and the reasons are local rather than mysterious.

Hard water is the biggest factor. Karachi's supply carries a high mineral load, which deposits scale on the heating element, drum and inlet valve. Scale insulates the heating element until it burns out, and it stiffens seals. This is the mechanism behind a large share of the heating element failures we see.

Voltage instability is the second. Fluctuation and the surge that arrives when load-shedding ends are hard on control boards and motors. A machine plugged straight into the wall has no protection from either.

Sediment in the water supply clogs inlet filters and valves, particularly in areas fed by tankers or where supply is intermittent and lines sit empty between fills.

Dust settles into the motor housing and vents, and combined with humidity it forms a paste that traps heat.

None of this is unavoidable. A voltage stabiliser, a periodic descaling cycle, and cleaning the inlet filter every couple of months address most of it, and cost far less than the repairs they prevent.

Repair or replace? A simple rule

The rule we give customers: repair if the machine is under eight years old and the repair costs less than about 40 percent of a comparable new unit. Outside those bounds, replacement usually makes better financial sense.

Some specifics worth knowing. A machine under five years old is almost always worth repairing — even a control board. A machine between five and ten years old is worth repairing for a pump, belt, valve, seal or heating element, but a combined motor-and-bearing failure is a genuine decision point. Past ten years, a major repair is often money spent on a machine that will present the next fault within a year.

One caveat on brands: parts for Dawlance and Haier are widely available and reasonably priced in Karachi, which shifts the calculation toward repair. Some imported models have scarce or expensive parts, which shifts it the other way. Ask about part availability before committing to a major repair — a technician who is straight with you about this is worth keeping.

Maintenance that actually extends machine life

Five habits, in rough order of impact:

  1. Clean the drain filter monthly. Ten minutes, no tools, and it prevents the most common fault in this guide.
  2. Run a monthly empty hot cycle with descaler (or white vinegar). This addresses the hard-water scale that kills heating elements and stiffens seals.
  3. Use a voltage stabiliser. One purchase, and it protects the control board — usually the most expensive part in the machine.
  4. Do not overload. The drum should be roughly three-quarters full at most. Overloading strains the motor, belt and bearings simultaneously, and cleans clothes worse.
  5. Leave the door and detergent drawer ajar after washing. Front-load machines develop mould and odour in the seal otherwise, and Karachi's humidity accelerates it.

If you would rather not track this, a maintenance contract covers scheduled servicing across your appliances. Our AMC plans exist for households and offices that prefer a fixed annual cost to unpredictable breakdown bills.

Frequently asked questions

How much does washing machine repair cost in Karachi?

Most common repairs fall between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 9,000 depending on the part. A drain pump or belt sits at the lower end; a motor, main PCB or drum bearing is at the higher end. Ask for the diagnosis and price before work begins.

Why is my washing machine not draining water?

Most often a blocked drain filter or hose, a failed drain pump, or a kinked outlet pipe. Cleaning the filter is a safe DIY check. If the machine still holds water afterwards, the pump usually needs replacing.

Why does my washing machine shake and move during spin?

Usually an unbalanced load, an unlevel floor, or transit bolts never removed after delivery. If the machine is level and the load balanced but it still bangs loudly, the bearings or shock absorbers are likely worn.

Can hard water in Karachi damage a washing machine?

Yes. Scale builds up on the heating element, drum and inlet valve, reducing wash quality and shortening component life. A monthly empty hot cycle with descaler and periodic inlet filter cleaning helps considerably.

Is it better to repair or replace an old washing machine?

Repair if the machine is under eight years old and the repair costs under roughly 40 percent of a new unit. If the bearings and motor have both failed on a machine over ten years old, replacement is usually better value.

Do you repair washing machines at home in Karachi?

Yes. Our verified technicians handle most washing machine repairs on-site across Karachi, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, DHA, Clifton, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar, PECHS and Bahadurabad. Only major drum or motor work occasionally needs workshop time.

The short version

Check the drain filter, the outlet hose, the inlet screen and the levelling before you call anyone — those four cover a real share of faults and cost nothing. But stop immediately for a burning smell, any shock from the body, grinding during spin, or a persistent leak. Those are not wait-and-see problems.

And if the machine has been making a new noise for a few weeks, deal with it now. Nearly every expensive washing machine repair our technicians attend started as a cheap one that was left alone.
