A fridge that's not cooling properly usually falls into one of two categories: something simple you can check yourself, or a component issue that needs a technician. Here's how to tell the difference.

1. Condenser coils covered in dust

The coils at the back or bottom of the fridge release heat — when they're covered in dust, the compressor has to work harder and cooling suffers. This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix: unplug the fridge and vacuum the coils gently. Do this every 6 months in Karachi's dusty conditions.

2. Door seal (gasket) not sealing properly

A worn or dirty door gasket lets cool air escape, forcing the compressor to run constantly without reaching the right temperature. Test it by closing the door on a piece of paper — if you can pull the paper out easily, the seal needs replacing.

3. Thermostat set incorrectly or faulty

Sometimes the setting has simply been bumped to a warmer level. Check the dial first. If it's set correctly but the fridge still runs warm, the thermostat sensor itself may have failed — this needs a technician to diagnose and replace.

4. Low refrigerant gas

If only certain sections of the fridge are cooling unevenly (like the freezer working fine but the main compartment warm), low gas is a likely cause. This always needs a technician — gas systems in fridges are sealed and require proper equipment to recharge.

5. Compressor issues

If the fridge makes unusual noises, runs constantly without reaching temperature, or doesn't turn on cooling at all, the compressor itself may be failing. This is the most serious cause and always requires professional diagnosis — running a fridge with a failing compressor for too long can lead to complete failure.

Quick self-check before calling for repair

If cleaning the coils and checking the seal doesn't resolve it within a day, the issue is likely gas or a component — at that point, a proper diagnostic visit saves time compared to guessing.
