If your AC needs a gas top-up every few weeks, the unit isn't cursed — and there's no citywide conspiracy behind it. In almost every case we've inspected across Karachi, recurring gas leaks trace back to one of four fixable technical issues.
1. The original leak was never actually found
Refrigerant doesn't disappear on its own — it escapes through a specific point in the copper piping or coil. Many quick repairs skip proper leak detection (using nitrogen pressure testing or a UV dye) and instead just refill the gas and move on. The leak reopens within weeks because the actual hole was never sealed.
2. Karachi's heat puts extra strain on the system
Units here run longer and harder than in milder climates, which puts more pressure on joints, valves and brazed connections — especially in units that are already a few years old or were installed with lower-quality piping.
3. Poor quality copper piping or installation
Thin-walled or poor-grade copper pipe corrodes and develops pinhole leaks faster, especially in coastal, humid air like Karachi's. Corners cut during the original installation tend to show up as recurring problems 1–3 years later.
4. Vibration damage from a poorly mounted outdoor unit
An outdoor unit that isn't mounted securely vibrates during operation, which can loosen flare fittings and joints over time — a slow leak that gets slightly worse with each passing month.
What an actual fix looks like
- Full pressure test with nitrogen to locate the exact leak point
- Proper brazing or fitting replacement at the leak — not just a gas refill
- Vacuum the line before recharging, to remove moisture and air
- Recharge to the manufacturer's exact gas specification, not a guess
A repair that skips these steps might look identical on the day of service — the AC will cool fine that afternoon — but the same leak often returns within a month or two.
